The Standells have long been considered one of the pioneering garage/punk bands, a decade ahead of their time. They were also billed as America's answer to The Beatles and toured with The Rolling Stones. Yet the story of The Standells includes a cast member of the Mickey Mouse Club, a fraternal connection to West Side Story, The Four Preps, a few tracks produced by Sonny Bono, a manager shared with Liberace, and - most improbable of all - the song "Dirty Water" serving for the last decade as the victory anthem of the Boston Red Sox.
One of the most exciting experiences for each of the original Standells was learning of this recent tradition at Boston's Fenway Park and then being invited to perform on the field during the 2004 World Series!
The more we dug into the story, the more we learned of the longstanding ties between music and the Red Sox , dating back to "Tessie" and the very first World Series in 1903 up through the singing careers of Mickey McDermott and Tony Conigliaro, the ballpark organ of John Kiley, and the strange story of how Annette Funicello's old drum kit, a mugging in Boston, and a Los Angeles nightclub band came together to create this most unique cultural artifact - an ode to a quirky city that resonates more fully now than it did back in the Sixties.
