In 1948, the Boston Braves won the National League pennant and went to the World Series. The Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians were tied at the end of the season; the Sox lost a one-game playoff. That one loss prevented a Braves/Red Sox Fall Classic in which the two teams located within a mile of each other would have played for the baseball championship of the world.

A full 40 members of the Society for American Baseball Research have contributed biographies of every player on the two teams, and managers Billy Southworth and Joe McCarthy - some 74 biographies in all.

It was a terrific summer of baseball featuring names that still evoke one of the golden eras of baseball - Warren Spahn, Johnny Sain, and Ted Williams, and favorites like Dom DiMaggio, Mel Parnell, Tommy Holmes, Sibby Sisti.

To top it all off, we asked Diamond Mind to run a simulation of a Braves/Red Sox "Streetcar Series." With dozens of previously unpublished photographs, this is a celebration of one very special baseball summer.
