Red Sox Threads is a collection of tangents and tidbits [Bill Nowlin] assembled while working on a dozen books about the Red Sox. Spinning the many stories of Red Sox history has led to rich and rewarding finds - the first Latino on the Red Sox (Frank Arellanes, 1908) and the first Native American (Case Patten, also 1908), the best and worst Opening Day and Patriots Day games, players who were stabbed or shot or killed themselves, and who served in the military. Learn about the only Red Sox player to play before the President of the US, the King of England, and have an audience with the Pope. Stats and streaks and hidden ball tricks, all the players who homered in their last at-bat, players who filled in as umpires during games, the time the whole team showed up to play in the wrong city, the night two men were killed in the wreck of the train transporting the team...think of a thread to follow and there's a good chance it's unraveled here.

Late into the Boston Red Sox's infamous 86-year championship drought -from 1918 to 2004 - it became nearly taboo to talk seriously about the 1918 team. A year after the Red Sox won their fifth World Championship in 15 years, owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, who went on to win their first of many titles.

Some even believed the Red Sox were cursed. The year the Sox had last won it all, 1918, became a sing-song taunt delivered by mocking Yankees fans.

This overlooked season was a fascinating one, played in the shadow of the first World War with dozens of players leaving for military service or war-related work all year long.

In this book, 28 members of the Society for American Baseball Research have compiled the most in-depth look at the 1918 Red Sox ever published. They have unearthed a wealth of information - much of it never seen before - about every one of the 32 players who suited up that year, from Hall-of-Famers Babe Ruth and Harry Hooper to Red Bluhm, who batted only once.

"Wearing lightly his notable learning, Abrams writes with verve and intelligence."
-New York Times Book Review

Roger Abrams discusses the vices of baseball and how they reflect who we are as Americans. Telling stories of baseball history that are often overlooked, The Dark Side of the Diamond presents evidence of game-fixing and gambling going back to the mid-19th century. Ty Cobb's sharpened spikes and nasty temperament were as much a part of his game as his steady bat.
Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose, and Barry Bonds are American idols, but flawed human beings. While baseball can teach young people about resourcefulness, fortitude, teamwork and pride, it is just as likely to instruct them in violence, disparagement, cheating, and human frailty.
Roger I. Abrams, of Boston Massachusetts, is the Richardson Professor of Law at Northeastern University and a Major League Baseball salary arbitrator since 1986. His commentaries on baseball have appeared in the nation's leading publications, and on television and radio. His previous books on the history of the National Game have won universal acclaim.

No other athlete this century has defied the calendar like the late Johnny Kelley. Named Runner of the Century by Runner's World magazine, Kelley participated in over sixty Boston Marathons, winning the event twice and running it well into his eighties. His persistence, warm good nature, and athletic achievements endeared him to generations, and to many he was thought of as the heart and soul of the world-famous Boston Marathon.

Johnny's life is a golden story, rich in running history and human feelings. Young at Heart is filled with remarkable stories of distance running throughout the twentieth century and the Boston Marathon. But Young at Heart is not just for runners; it’s a wonderful story for people of all abilities and interests who want to give life their very best and, metaphorically, never stopped running.

When writer and broadcaster Dan Valenti covered spring training on freelance assignments primarily centered on the Boston Red Sox during the 1980s, he fortunately took his camera with him. These photos, published here for the first time, depict spring training during a time that will never come again. In the 1980s, particularly early- to mid-decade, players' salaries had not exploded into megamillion-dollar contracts, fans still had essentially unregulated access to the action, and the focus was on baseball.

Many of the great stars of Red Sox history are pictured in these pages. You'll witness Ted Williams, Jerry Remy, Carl Yastrzemski, Roger Clemens, Johnny Pesky, Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson, Wade Boggs, and a host of other Sox players. Alongside the photos, Valenti's thoughtful text explores both his personal experiences behind the scenes and the greater philosophical implications of the spring training ritual.

Dan Valenti, who hosts a daily radio talk show, is the author of numerous books, including many on baseball. He also works as a newspaper columnist and is a college adjunct professor of English. He lives with his wife Paula and family in western Massachusetts.

"The vivid, brawling story of the real Rocky, the greatest slugger in the history of boxing!" - Sports Illustrated

"A great book." - Willie Pep, former World Featherweight Champion

Young Rocco Marchegiano entered this world an underdog.

He came perilously close to dying of pneumonia when only 19 months old. He grew up watching his father trudge home stooped and exhausted from long shifts at the shoe factories of Brockton, Massachusetts, with barely enough money to feed the growing family. He felt the sting of a world in which Italian-Americans were mercilessly looked down upon. All of this fueled his relentless desire to become Rocky Marciano - the greatest heavyweight fighter the world had ever seen, and the only champion to retire with an undefeated record (49-0, 43 KOs).

When, at 25, he decided to pursue a boxing title, they all said he was too old. Too small. Too slow. Too graceless in the ring. They didn't know the fire that consumed him, the relentless drive to become the best and, in the process, elevate his family, his friends, and his race from their meager status. Fierce determination, the loyal support of his paesanos, and a grueling training regimen put him on the road from his early Massachusetts and Rhode Island victories in 1947 and '48 to his eventual defeat of Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952 for the world heavyweight championship.

But Undefeated is more than just the story of a boxer. It is a story of a man engulfed by his own battles to escape the binds imposed upon him.

After successfully defending his title six times, Rocky Marciano retired from the ring in 1956. His post-fight years are marked by restlessness and insecurity - an unending parade of undocumented business deals, non-stop travel, and personal appearances, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash still unaccounted for - perhaps literally buried in locations only known to Rocky. His sudden, tragic death in a 1969 plane crash left many unanswered questions.

Drawing on innumerable hours of interviews, research, and intensive study of each of Marciano's classic bouts, this is the definitive document of a boxing legend: Rocky Marciano, the fighter who refused to lose.

For thirty years, Neil Peart had wanted to write a book about "the biggest journey of all in my restless existence: the life of a touring musician." Finally, the right time, and the right tour...

In the summer of 2004, after three decades, twenty gold albums, and thousands of performances spanning four continents, the band Rush embarked on a celebratory 30th Anniversary World Tour. The "R30" tour traveled to nine countries, where the band performed fifty-seven shows in front of more than half a million fans. Uniquely, Peart chose to do his between-show traveling by motorcycle, riding 21,000 miles of back roads and highways in North America and Europe - from Appalachian hamlets and Western deserts to Scottish castles and Alpine passes.

Roadshow illuminates the daunting rigors of a major international concert tour, as well as Peart's exploration of the scenic byways and country towns along the way. His evocative and entertaining prose carries the reader through every performance and every journey, sharing the bittersweet reflections triggered by the endlessly unfolding landscape. Observations and reflections range from the poignantly, achingly personal to the wickedly irreverent.

Part behind-the-scenes memoir, part existential travelogue, Roadshow winds through nineteen countries on both sides of the Atlantic, in search of the perfect show, the perfect meal, the perfect road, and an elusive inner satisfaction that comes only with the recognition that the journey itself is the ultimate destination.

The inner workings of the tour, the people Peart works with and the people he meets, the roads and stages and ever-changing scenery - all flow into an irresistible story.

It had been 21 years since the Sox last reached the post-season.

Dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of fans streamed out onto the Fenway infield mobbing Lonborg, who lost a shirt and his shoelaces as he struggled through the delirious crowd to get to the clubhouse. Two or three dozen fans climbed the backstop screen toward the broadcast booth. Others dismantled the scoreboard in left field. Many just tore out handfuls of grass and stuffed their pockets. It truly was, in the words of Red Sox radio announcer Ned Martin, "pandemonium on the field."

As Peter Gammons once wrote on this great season, "The Red Sox were always New England's team, yes, but it took the Impossible Dream of 1967 to turn it into a romanticized mystique and keep the legion of fans coming by the millions.... It wasn't always the way it is now, and might never have been but for '67."

This book is a tribute to the men of the Impossible Dream team, comprised of individual original biographies (many based on fresh interviews) of all 39 players that year, plus each of the four coaches, manager Dick Williams, and GM Dick O'Connell. The bios are supplemented with appreciations of this remarkable season by an all-star lineup featuring Andy Andres, Gerry Beirne, Joe Castiglione, Ken Coleman, Dan Desrochers, Gordon Edes, Peter Gammons, Tom Harkins, Dick Johnson, Jim Lonborg, Bill Nowlin, Harvey Soolman, Glenn Stout, Dan Valenti, Tom Werner, and Saul Wisnia.

Contains a selection of over 150 rare photographs and memorabilia from this special Red Sox season.

With Forewords by: Tom Werner, current chairman of the Boston Red Sox and Jim Lonborg, 1967 Cy Young Award winner.

A project of the Boston chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research, this volume gathers the collective efforts of more than 60 SABR members and friends of the non-profit research society.

"He did a helluva good job. Ted only batted .406 for the Red Sox. He batted a thousand for the Marine Corps and the United States."
- John Glenn

Ted Williams was the only Hall of Fame ballplayer who saw military service in two wars. He was a fight instructor with the United States Marine Corps in World War II and flew 39 combat missions in the Korean War - several of them as wingman for squadron mate John Glenn. Shot down once, on his third mission, Williams was lucky to escape with his life. He was back up and flying less than 24 hours later.

There aren't too many athletes who are truly heroes. Ted Williams was one such athlete. Imagine Alex Rodriguez or Barry Bonds flying dive-bombing missions in close air support of troops on the ground, taking anti-aircraft fire as they pulled out of the dive as low as 500 feet. Imagine the records Williams might have set had he not devoted nearly five full seasons to serving the country.

Most biographies of Ted Williams devote a chapter or two to the five years he spent in the Marines. Bill Nowlin has interviewed over 40 pilots, who flew with Capt. Williams from K-3 in Korea, and interviewed over 120 people in all who knew or encountered Ted Williams during his years of service. Combined with access to Williams' squadron records, his personal flight logbooks, and his fitness and evaluation reports, Ted Williams At War presents by far the most comprehensive portrait of a man that many termed "the real John Wayne."

Features a wealth of over 100 photographs (most previously unpublished) from Ted's time in the service.

In no professional sport have more men sacrificed for their country than baseball. In No Greater Love, many of baseball's military veterans - Bert Shepard, Don Newcombe, Dom DiMaggio, Jerry Coleman, Johnny Pesky, Ernie Harwell, Vin Scully, Bob Feller, and others - tell their stories - not just the facts of what they did, but more importantly, how they felt about their service and how their war experiences changed them as players and as men.

The memories and wisdom of the men who saved baseball assist author Todd Anton as he pursues his own personal mission to honor his late father, a World War II/Korean War combat veteran. No Greater Love melds together elements reminding readers of both Field of Dreams and Saving Private Ryan.

Todd Anton, inspired and trained by historian Stephen Ambrose, serves on the Board of Trustees of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. He is also a public school history teacher in Phelan, California.

The Standells have long been considered one of the pioneering garage/punk bands, a decade ahead of their time. They were also billed as America's answer to The Beatles and toured with The Rolling Stones. Yet the story of The Standells includes a cast member of the Mickey Mouse Club, a fraternal connection to West Side Story, The Four Preps, a few tracks produced by Sonny Bono, a manager shared with Liberace, and - most improbable of all - the song "Dirty Water" serving for the last decade as the victory anthem of the Boston Red Sox.

One of the most exciting experiences for each of the original Standells was learning of this recent tradition at Boston's Fenway Park and then being invited to perform on the field during the 2004 World Series!

The more we dug into the story, the more we learned of the longstanding ties between music and the Red Sox , dating back to "Tessie" and the very first World Series in 1903 up through the singing careers of Mickey McDermott and Tony Conigliaro, the ballpark organ of John Kiley, and the strange story of how Annette Funicello's old drum kit, a mugging in Boston, and a Los Angeles nightclub band came together to create this most unique cultural artifact - an ode to a quirky city that resonates more fully now than it did back in the Sixties.
